Reaching The End

The final instalment of the Destiny series, currently entitled Destiny's Whatever (title will more than likely change), is well on its way.  I'm having fun, getting to the depths of various mysteries, while letting my characters have some fun and blow stuff up.

This is the second time I reach the third book in a series (I like three - it's a nice, clean number. Must be my failed catholic upbringing).  When I wrote Sorceress of Shadows, the final volume in my Heirs of a Broken Land series, I very much had the same experience I do now.

The first book is all about discovery. Discovering your world, your characters, your intrigues... It's a wild ride not to be taken lightly.

The second book, I find, is the highest pressure book. You don't want your series to slack off in the middle, so you have to keep things tense. The story can't just be filler.  It has to have a reason and purpose for being, while leaving the readers wanting book 3.

The last book, however, is a whole other beast. This is probably your characters' final curtsy.  This is your last chance to visit those hauntings, to give them the moments they've been waiting for (or not), and to let them breathe their last.  Oh, I mean, they might live beyond the third book, but  it'll be off page. A whole other experience.

The final book has to live beyond the pages in your readers' imaginations. It has to be a satisfying ending for them, too - the readers stuck with you this long, after all!  And it has to remain true to the story, no matter how much you might want to end on a high note with sparkling unicorns and caffeinated rainbows.  That's rarely the way to go (thankfully).

I'm reading a trilogy right now and I'm on book 3, the final book (at least so far).  I whipped through books 2 and most of 3 in a few days, regardless of their impressive girth. But I'm slowing down, with less than 200 pages to go.  I'm not sure why I slowed down, but I suspect that, at this point, I'm a bit scared. A few events in the last book made me feel like the author was doing this because it was her last chance to make the characters do something, even if it no longer fit the story.  I might be wrong - I haven't finished the story, after all, but it was enough to make me worry.

I might also have slowed down because I know I only have a few pages left with these characters, and after investing so much into them, I'll miss them when they're gone.

I'm keeping all of this in mind as I write my own final book.  I want it to answer questions while coming up with plausible resolutions for issues plaguing my characters, some since Destiny's Blood.  It's a bit hard watching my characters take their final curtsy, too. I mean, it's hard letting go of characters from books you've read, but it's a lot harder letting go of ones you're writing.

The book is due this Thanksgiving at Dragon Moon Press, and I still have a lot of work to do.  August is full of cons and outings, but I'm still confident I can get 'er done.  I'll keep you up to date!

Onward to The End we go!

ABOUT DESTINY'S FALL

Cover not final. But ain't it pretty?

A broken tradition. A hunted child. A rebellion that threatens to topple the very fabric of the universe.

When Layela Delamores gives birth to her first child, the ether immediately rejects what should be its only heir. A wave of destruction sweeps the ether races and sparks Solaria’s ire and rebellion on Mirial. A new heir rises to take the throne of Mirial, one who wields tainted ether.

Unable to access the flow of ether, Layela is left with little choice but to flee Mirial, seeking answers that may no longer exist, prepared to pay whatever the cost to free herself and her daughter from the clutches of the First Star.

Letters with no Reply - Manuscript

Sometimes it's best not to get replies. Or send letters.  Still, a letter needed to be written to this evil, uncooperative manuscript.  It was going to be an awesome book, a prequel to Destiny's Blood, but it was not meant to be. Heck, it didn't WANT to be!  I was struggling (for a whole month!)

Meanwhile, not knowing I was working on this despicable book, Dragon Moon Press requested two sequels to Destiny's Blood.  Now there was a sign that I should change writing gears!

Once I started writing the first sequel, I understood why the prequel wasn't working out. My heroes were not in the right place, or rather the right time. The sequel started tumbling together as I used bits of the prequel, their story now supporting this story instead of being the story. (Work that out in your heads.)

As the first of those two sequels is now in Gabrielle Harbowy's awesome editing hands, it's time for me to truly let go of that failed prequel. Here's the letter I wrote to it before giving up on it.

Dearest Manuscript,

I was very excited about your imminent arrival.  I cleaned up my desktop and my writing desk for you.  I made a new file.  I archived old documents.  I bought a new notebook (hard-cover, spiral-bound, 8.5x11 – my faves), and I purchased multiple-coloured pens to welcome you in style.

Despite all of this, you have yet to show up.  After the first few days I brushed it off as a minor held-back, perhaps a traffic jam?  But it has been over a month, and I have come to believe that you, manuscript, are inconsiderate.

Oh, the plans I had for you.  We were going to dive back into the world of Destiny’s Blood and face the Ether Wars.  We were going to rely on the powers of the Berganda to lead us through the wild chase, and help a young woman find her best friend and her true home.  People were going to laugh, cry, and feel damn good about the whole thing by the end.

And I was ready for that ending.  I had the last party all planned out.  Our Berganda heroine was going to come back after having faced pain, death, true friendship, loss and hope, and she was going to go back home, where it all began.  And that was going to be the greatest metamorphosis for her, and it would have changed her fate forever.  A fate changed of her own choice. That was going to be the best part.

But no.  You just didn’t feel like showing up.

I'm disappointed in you, Manuscript. Very, very disappointed.  But you know what? I'll go on without you. There are plenty of other manuscripts that would like to hang out with me. I don't need you.

So there.

Love,

Marie

Finalist in the Foreword Book Awards!

Destiny's Blood is a finalist in the 2010 Foreword Book Awards, in the Science-Fiction category!  The Foreword Awards recognize fine books from independent publishers in Canada and the U.S.  This year, there were more than 1,400 entries from 350 publishers (for all categories).  W00t!

(I always feel that Destiny's Blood being classified as science-fiction would make Isaac Asimov cry.  Yet I go on.)

Congrats to the other Dragon Moon Press authors who are in various categories:

  • Angel of Chaos by Nina Munteanu
  • Murder at Avedon Hill by P.G. Holyfield
  • Scimitar Sun by Chris A. Jackson (winner of last year's award!)
  • Toothless by J.P. Moore
Go Dragon Moon!  Talk about an impressive amount of finalists - thanks to Gwen Gades and Gabrielle Harbowy for taking such good care of all of our books!

The Foreword Winners will be announced at this year's Book Expo America in New York City.  I was pondering going, but with Anime North already confirmed, I'll probably pass (because it's the weekend right after and a girl can only run around so much).  But I'll be following the Twitter feed to see if Destiny's Blood wins gold, silver or bronze!  Keep your fingers crossed!  (Well, okay, don't.  I'm not covering your medical bill when you get weird side effects from months of finger crossing.  I'm just not. Wow, between this and making Isaac Asimov cry, I'm pretty heartless today!  I'll have to make up karma tomorrow.)

Before I sign off, let me just say: YAY!!!  :D

Destiny's Blood on Amazon!

I just spent an amazing week at a cottage with nothing but my best friends, my laptop and a couple of good books.  One of the best (and, admittedly, scariest) parts was having no Internet.  But then I came back to some wonderful surprises, including Destiny's Blood on Amazon.com and Amazon.ca!

The Heirs of a Broken Land trilogy won't be available on Canadian sites until the release of its second edition in 2012, so this is the first listing on Amazon.ca for one of my books.  It's cool to see!  And it'll be easier for Canadian readers to get, which is a big bonus.

The official launch for Destiny's Blood will be on August 20, at CAN-CON in Ottawa (where I'm Guest of Honour).  The launch will take place at the Travelodge on Carling, from 7 to 10 pm, and we'll have platters! Come out, enjoy, chat it up and buy a book!

On Destiny's Blood (cover art by the amazing Kari-Ann Anderson)

Layela Delamores wants nothing more than to settle into a quiet, peaceful life, running her small flower shop with her twin sister, Yoma. But the peace she craves is shattered each night by terrifying visions that she can never remember upon waking. When Yoma vanishes, Layela is certain that her nightly visions hold the key. Only her sister's thieving friend, one of the last surviving members of the ether races, can unlock them, but Layela suspects that her friend isn’t telling her the whole truth.

Torn from the safety of her flower shop and thrust into a universe of smugglers and assassins, Layela must pursue her sister across space in a desperate bid to overcome the destruction foretold in her dreams. But without full knowledge of her visions, she has no way to prevent them from coming to pass. And the fate of an entire galaxy hangs in the balance.

Unless Layela finds a way to stop destiny itself. But that would mean sacrificing her sister.

Or herself.
